Rafa’s revolution challenge

Magpies boss challenges current players to write their name into the history books

Not an easy challenge by any stretch of the imagination. Alan Shearer remains the Premier League all time top goal scorer on 260 goals with only Wayne Rooney the other player to ever score over 200 goals in England’s top flight division.

Rafa’s revolution continues to build. Following getting our beloved Magpies back to where we belong Benitez has now challenged his current crop of players to get their name included amongst the all time top Newcastle XI.

The likes of Shearer, Shay Given, Peter Beardsley and Tony Green are amongst the names shortlisted.

The event was attended by Benitez and several of his players as club legends Les Ferdinand and Shola Ameobi were inducted into the Newcastle United Foundation’s Hall of Fame.

This great club has enjoyed many memorable moments – who could forget the 5-0 thrashing of Manchester United in 1996 or a debut appearance in the Champions League in 1997. It’s fantastic to see a Manager capable of handling the pressure of such a big club with aspirations of replicating the historic feats of previous players and teams.

Speaking to The Chronicle Benitez outlined his desire for the current players to emulate those that have come before them.

“Hopefully in my time here we will have more of those great names who might be part of the greatest xi.”

“Obviously, a big club has a lot of big players in its history so it’s really important for us to realise that,”

“We try to go about doing things in the same way they were doing things (in the past) as well, and hopefully in my time here we will have more of those great names too who might be part of the Greatest XI.

“At the moment, we have a young team with young players – some of them don’t have experience of the Premier League. They are in a learning process and we have to make sure that they are going one step in the right direction.”

The challenge from Rafa maybe a difficult one but it will be interesting to watch who takes it up – to become the latest legend on the Toon!
