The Good Food Guide Uk has this week published the Top 50 restaurants in the UK and the North East’s only two star Michelin restaurant The Raby Hunt has been ranked number 40 on the coveted list.

The guide, produced by Waitrose ranks restaurants throughout the UK based on public reviews and anonymous inspections by experts.

Cornwall’s Restaurant Nathan Outlaw has remained pride of place at number 1 on the list for the second year running after knocking Cumbria’s L’Enclume down to second spot last year.

Unsurprisingly the majority of the top 50 restaurants are based down south, however there were a couple from the North West and Scotland.

Adam Reid at The French in Manchester came in at number 15 and Fraiche in Merseyside ranked a few spots lower at number 19.

Self taught chef and owner of the Baby Hunt James Close is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading talents was delighted that Raby Hunt made the top 50 again.

“We’re delighted to have appeared in the Top 50 yet again.

“Competition get stronger every year so it’s great news to see that we’ve continued to maintain our presence as one of the leading restaurants in the country.”

In 2012 Close saw the benefits of his hard work when he was awarded his first Michelin star and then last year the restaurant received the second making it the first and only restaurant in the North East to achieve the honour.

Also named Chef of the Year by Good Food Guide in 2017 Close didn’t begin working in restaurants until the age of 26 as a pot washer – previously he had been working towards playing Golf professionally but gave up when he realised he wasn’t good enough.

Since purchasing the Raby Hunt back in 2009 with the help of his parents Close has worked hard on refurbishing the 200-year old Grade 2 listed building and barely pays himself the minimum wage – preferring to focus on becoming a better Chef.

When he isn’t working in his own restaurant Close admits he likes to eat in the world’s best restaurants – so we wouldn’t expect the Raby Hunt to be dropping out of Good Food Guide’s Top 50 restaurants in the UK anytime soon.
