North East artists should not only be commended, they should be celebrated for the amazing work they do. As a region, we are fortunate to have some truly amazing home-grown talent right here on our doorstep.
From time to time you may see our more famous local artists work sporadically displayed in the city’s art galleries, however, this really is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to North East Art. There is so much more out there to appreciate; to marvel at. Fortunately for us there is a place tucked away on the upper floor of Newcastle’s Eldon Gardens which has dedicated itself to recognise and showcase all things local when it comes to art.
“This gallery’s ethos is to cater for anyone and everyone, and to celebrate the North East”
North East Art Collective is the name of this ‘Secret Garden’ within Eldon Square, an art gallery which houses a myriad of local artists work from all disciplines including: Watercolours, Oils, Photography, Glass works, Ceramics, Furniture Design, Textiles, Sculptures and more.
Established over four years ago by owner John Thompson, The gallery has since grown in reputation and indeed volume with over 2,000 pieces on show at any time. With literally every square inch of wall and floor space occupied by a magnificent piece of art, this hidden gem should receive maximum kudos for bringing us, up close and personal with these magnificent local artists.
“When you enter the gallery you are instantly mesmerized by the vast quantity and quality of the works on show”
With over 100 local artists on show and the same amount on the ever-growing waiting list, the North East Art Collective display works from established Artists such as Walter Holmes, Kevin Day, Jim Edwards and Alexander Perry. Respectively, creations from new and emerging talent including works from regional students are deservedly showcased side by side with the big name artists works.
The real beauty of this venue is that you can spend hours perusing the plethora of art crammed into their deceptively large gallery and when you fall in love with ‘that piece of art ‘(which you will), you have the opportunity and the privilege to purchase the work at prices to suit every budget.
With prices ranging from £10 to £10,000, the gallery’s ethos is to cater for anyone and everyone, and to celebrate the North East. Reassuringly the North East Art Collective pays artists a premium for their works and contributes to local charities.
“Our aim is to showcase local talent across a range of artistic disciplines but to offer for sale a range of work suitable for every pocket”
Supporting this impressive gallery is an insightful, user friendly website which allows users to browse through the artists works and read their individual stories.
I believe that we should really support the North East Art Collective as they allow us to connect with our city through art, and stand loud and proud when it comes to epitomising everything that is good about Newcastle.
