A 13th century medieval banquet hall in Newcastle city centre is experiencing a surge of wedding bookings thanks to a demand for more intimate ceremonies with short lead times, and to celebrate is having a Wedding Fayre to showcase the venue on February 22, 2015.
Blackfriars Restaurant and Banquet Hall, located on Friars Street in the centre of Newcastle, has seen wedding ceremonies and receptions triple as more people are opting for smaller and bijoux weddings with shorter lead times of 3-6 months. The venue has also experienced an increase for mid-week weddings as couples turn their backs on traditional Saturday dates to save money with Thursday and Fridays being the most popular dates.
Stephanie and Tom Hawks from Ryton, Tyne & Wear, tied the knot at Blackfriars in August 2014 having only booked their wedding four months in advance. Stephanie, who is a nurse therapist in GP Practice at Northumberland Tyne and Wear Mental Health Foundation said: “We had been thinking of getting married for a while but didn’t want to commit to the venue years in advance. Once we’d decided to get married we didn’t want to wait a long time. Blackfriars offered lots of flexibility and turned everything around for us in a few months.
“We were attracted by the history of the venue and the gorgeous originality of the building. The wedding ceremony experience felt like we were in an intimate chapel, and afterwards was transformed into a spectacular dining banquet hall. Our priority was great food and wine and brilliant, efficient and informal but professional service which we got from Blackfriars. All the guests commented on what a special individual venue we had chosen and how relaxed it was.
“We’re so pleased that our wedding services have proved to be so popular with those looking for a smaller, intimate celebration…”
“The courtyard meant we had fantastic pictures and a beautiful space for guests to mill outside. We also reserved the downstairs of the restaurant in case the weather turned. We needed to use this whilst the room was prepared after the wedding ceremony, which meant everyone was comfortable and warm whilst they ate delicious canapés and drank fizz.”
Blackfriars is inviting brides and grooms to-be to a special Wedding Fayre on Sunday February 22, to give them plenty of ideas for hair and beauty, table and room decorations, photography and entertainment.
The ornate Banquet Hall at Blackfriars offers a dramatic and magical backdrop for intimate wedding ceremonies or receptions with its authentic banners, chandeliers, stained glass windows and furnishings enjoyed by kings and nobles including King Edward III in medieval times. The venue has the added benefit of a picturesque Cloister Garden which couples can use for photos and drinks receptions in the heart of Newcastle.
The event will take place from 12-3pm and admission is free. Visitors will be treated to complimentary fizz and canapés to sample the food on offer at Blackfriars.
As well as the 50-seat Banquet Hall, guests also have the option of dining at Blackfriars Restaurant, which received the Taste of England accolade at the North East England Tourism Awards and was voted Best North East Restaurant in the Licensed Trade Awards 2014.
Andy Hook, owner of Blackfriars, said: “We’re so pleased that our wedding services have proved to be so popular with those looking for a smaller, intimate celebration who don’t want to plan for years to tie the knot. We offer brides and grooms a truly unique setting in which to celebrate their big day in the heart of the city and are now staging around 30 weddings per year.
“The trend towards smaller weddings and mid week weddings is mirroring the national trend as people look for more cost effective ways to get married and a couple can enjoy a ceremony and reception from £2500 at Blackfriars. Our Wedding Fayre will showcase all we have to offer and our dedicated wedding team will be on hand to answer any questions that prospective couples may have about their special day.”
