Choirs, Christmas animals and street entertainers will be bringing the festive cheer to Newcastle city centre next week when the markets make way for other seasonal activities in the city.
As soon as the Christmas markets depart from Grey’s Monument this Sunday, NE1 Ltd, the Business Improvement District (BID) company for Newcastle city centre, steps in to deliver a week of Christmas carols and festive songs from choirs from across the city.
Together with other major street entertainment there will be plenty to keep the city festive up to Sunday 23 December.
Monday 17 December kick starts the festive delights with the 80-strong Rock Choir performing at the Monument at 5.30pm and then again at 6.30pm.
To compliment the carols and to offer something for everyone to enjoy in the run up to Christmas, NE1 has arranged for reindeers and some of Santa’s other festive friends to be brought into the heart of the city.
A free, mini petting zoo will be set up at the Monument for the week from 11am – 5pm to offer the public the chance to pet the animals and to learn more about them and their natural habitats. Reindeer and alpaca will be at the Monument on different days of the week.
Monday, Tuesday and Sunday will see choirs performing at the Monument with the Rock Choir on Monday, the Indigo Choir on Tuesday 18th at 5.30 and 6.30, Heaton Voices on Wednesday 19th at 5.30pm and 6.30pm and the Blue Light Choir on Sunday 23rd from 3.30 – 4pm.
All choirs will be collecting for their chosen cause while performing for the public.
Throughout NE1’s ‘Twas the Week before Christmas’ activities – Stagecoach’s festive Santa bus will be joining the seasonal celebrations.
From 9 – 5pm each day, the festive bus will be parked on Grainger Street for younger city centre visitors to enjoy a free visit to Santa’s Grotto on-board the Christmas bus!
As if all of that wasn’t enough, NE1 has organised a full programme of street entertainment to bring the early evenings to life.
Among the entertainers lined up for the week is Spark – an internationally renowned street theatre group who perform with drums and LED lights – a truly festive spectacular.
Ben Whitfield, Marketing and Events Manager at NE1 Ltd said: “We wanted to make Newcastle’s Christmas celebrations bigger and better this year offering something for everyone to enjoy right up to Christmas Eve.
“We are delighted to welcome back the choirs to the Monument who were so warmly received last year and have boosted the festive activities with street entertainers and a mini petting zoo.
“We hope it will help people get into the festive spirit in the week before Christmas.”
