It’s an extreme rarity when you can recommend Breakfast, lunch, and evening meal solutions all from the same venue. I recently stumbled upon Coast to Coast, an American Restaurant/Bar chain which has fairly recently taken up residence in the impressive Gate, Newcastle. I simply had to see if this impressive looking diner could ‘walk the walk’ rather than just ‘talk the talk’.
C2C’s spacious interior has a real classic American feel, yet more like a classy joint in Massachusetts rather than a diner in New York. The venue boasts sleek dark wood trim and spacious booths with plush leather seating. The walls are festooned with framed original US memorabilia and there’s a soundtrack of Motown and classic US Rock which contributes to the venue’s tangible American theme.
Let’s start with the breakfast menu which includes a wealth of American favourites and some more traditional Anglo offerings for those who prefer savoury to sweet. However, when in Rome…
Coast to Coast’s breakfast menu boasts some amazing creations inspired by our cousins from ‘across the pond’ including; delicious freshly made waffles and pancakes with a wealth of decedent toppings (£4.95), French toast with crispy bacon and maple syrup (£6.95), or the formidable breakfast burger (£12.95). In Keeping with true American tradition, the portions are as large as they are delicious and C2C offer unlimited hot drink refills with breakfast. After you’ve had one of these breakfasts you will be ready to take on the world!

C2C offer a special lunch menu on weekdays between 11am-5pm which includes one course for £8.95 or two courses for £10.95. The menu offers an interesting choice of appetisers including; crispy chicken strips and loaded skins. The mains include; the deliciously authentic Coast hot dog, prime beef burgers, a choice of wraps, pizzas, pastas and salads. I tried the Coast hot dog which certainly did not disappoint. Served with a portion of fries and a BBQ dip, the dog was meaty, flavoursome and generous in size as you would expect from an authentic American street food classic.
I returned later that evening in order to sample an offering from Coast to Coast’s recently amended main menu which featured all their old favourites and many interesting new dishes including; homemade sea salt pretzels with a garlic butter dip and crispy blue cheese chicken for appetisers. I opted for the Chicago wings in a BBQ sauce (6.95). They arrived beautifully presented in their own little bucket, glazed, garnished and complimented with celery sticks and a blue cheese dip (a nice touch). Intensely flavoursome, generous in size and portion, these wings were up there with some of the best I had tasted.
“C2C have pretty much have ‘all the bases covered’ when it comes to authentic American main course ideas”
For the main course, I really was spoilt for choice as the main menu is epic. C2C have pretty much have ‘all the bases covered’ when it comes to authentic American main course ideas. This massive menu enticed me with a myriad of dishes including; premium handmade burgers, steaks, fajitas, Chicago style pizzas, salads, pasta, a specials menu and then some. I finally decided upon the 8oz Casterbridge Steak (£19.95), a 28 day dry aged piece of magnificent fillet which has been reared in Casterbridge UK, a place renowned for its superior beef. Cooked medium and accompanied with fries and a sunblush tomato salad, the dish truly was a work of art. The good sized, beautifully tender piece of meat, which simply melted in my mouth, was complimented perfectly by the fries and salad. There was a choice of sauces available; however, to eat this impressive steak other than the way God intended would be nothing short of sacrilege.
Despite being full, I was unwilling to forsake dessert. Their impressive desserts menu is full of famous American classics including; New York cheesecake, chocolate brownie and hand made milkshakes. I opted for the peanut butter New York cheese cake (£5.95) which was served with a scoop of honeycomb ice cream and a generous dollop of Chantilly cream. This scrumptious dessert was smooth in texture, light and intensely flavoured; a wonderful end to a wonderful meal.
I highly recommend Coast 2 Coast as I believe the chain have really embraced all the fundamental values of which necessitate a perfect American dining experience. The swift and friendly service, delicious food and generous portions offer patrons a true reflection of what Uncle Sam has to offer. C2C offer frequent promotions, therefore, I would recommend you browse their website prior to your visit.
