What if we told you a 20 minute workout could be equivalent to three hours in the gym? This is exactly what Kern Fitness claim about their new fitness system, the first of its kind in the UK.
So what it is: A 20 minute personalised training session combined with electro muscular stimulation. This means the work you put in is multiplied by electronic pulses contracting your muscles at the same time. One muscle contraction, while using this technology, is equivalent to 85 ordinary contractions. Sounds impressive, right.
The session starts with a personal trainer gearing you up in a vest and various straps that have been soaked in warm water to increase transmission of the electrical current. These are then plugged into the system which controls everything and tracks your workout. This is where the fun starts. The stimulation to each part of the body is individually controlled so you are getting a completely personalised experience.
My personal trainer, Steven started me off on a low intensity so I had a chance to get used to the bizarre pins and needles going crazy in my arms, legs, abs and back. Although it feels strange at first, I was surprised by how quickly I got used to the feeling and the gradual increase in intensity felt ok. Now for the workout.
Steven, led me through a series of squats, lunges and crunches, all timed around the regular rhythm of the electric current coursing through my muscles. Although the exercises didn’t feel any harder, I did notice that I tired more quickly than I normally would so all these straps were definitely doing something. By the end of 20 minutes I felt slightly out of breath but certainly not the sweaty, exhausted mess I would be after 3 hours in the gym.
So what next? Steven promised I would feel the effects of the session tomorrow or the following day and to make sure I took a couple of rest days before exercising again. At Kern Fitness they recommend once a week training sessions and an absolute maximum of twice a week, as the electro muscular stimulation is so intense. I left feeling remarkably fresh but reassured of my efforts by the post-workout hunger pangs that soon kicked in.
Still not fully convinced? Well Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal and the German football team are all big fans and who doesn’t want to look like them. As soon as you arrive at Kern Fitness the personal trainers go through your goals, whether general fitness, training for an event or trying to strengthen a particular area. All your information is stored in an electronic card which is inserted into the system so your progress is tracked and future setup takes seconds.
The technology originated in Germany and Kern Fitness are the first in the UK to offer it. Ideal as a lunch break workout, Kern Fitness in conveniently located behind Central Station but still discreet enough to suit those who find regular gyms intimidating. You get a full body workout in 20 minutes and can be back at your desk, looking fresh, minutes later.
Kern Fitness are currently offering a trail package of two sessions for £25. Individual sessions start from £30 each but they offer a range of great value packages, including bride-to-be and post-pregnancy.
