One chilly, damp and dull winters day, The I Love NCL Team were out and about on the streets of Newcastle diligently chasing that next big story. Lunch time was nigh and as we walked through The Bigg Market, We picked up the irresistible scent of oregano, Basil and Garlic emanating from one of its many side streets.

“You instantly recognise that you have entered a well established family run business reinforced by the warmth and friendliness of the staff.”

Following our noses, we eventually stumbled upon Mamma Mia’s Restaurant and Pizzeria. A small but quirky looking eatery, which did not look dissimilar to a Pizzeria you would find on any back street in Rome.

As we walked through the door it was like stepping back in time into a New York 1960’s Italian Diner with Pictures of Sinatra, Martin and Davis Junior mounted on the wall and the sound system playing some very decent swing tunes in the background. The tables were small but cosy, the lighting was dimmed and the decorating was aged but certainly authentic.

The main menu had an abundance of authentic Italian dishes including a wealth of Meat, fish and Vegetarian dishes. We kept it simple and ordered from the lunch time special menu, Pizza Margherita and Spaghetti served with an Arrabiata sauce at a very reasonable £4.50 per person.

The Food arrived promptly accompanied with two glasses of very palatable house red.

The pizza was of good size with a freshly homemade, stone baked thin crust. The topping consisted of a rich and tasty aromatic sauce with a generous cheese topping.

The Spaghetti was not made from fresh Pasta; however it was a generous portion cooked perfectly al dente. For less than a fiver what do you expect? The sauce was generous, rich and flavoursome with a Piquant bite that did not disappoint.

“We left the Mamma Mia’s with our bellies fuller and our wallets only slightly lighter.”

If you are looking to eat good, honest and authentic Italian food for less than a Fiver per head, I would definitely recommend you pay a visit to Mamma Mia’s Restaurant and Pizzeria and take advantage of their Lunchtime and evening specials “Molto Buona.”
