‘Hot Wax’ is the latest buzz word in the world of hair removal but unfortunately it still doesn’t guarantee you smooth, bruise free skin painlessly – unless, that is, you visit a specialist. So that’s exactly what I Love Newcastle did.

Waxology opened in Newcastle city centre in February, promising men and women of the city cutting edge waxing treatments performed by specialist therapists. Although waxology opened in Durham last year as the only salon to offer hot wax treatments, Owner Frances decided to extend her niche salon into Newcastle to rescue us Geordies from botched waxes. Hands up if you’ve experienced one, yes us too! In the last two months business has flooded in and extra staff (trained by Kim Lawless, the ‘Waxing Queen’) have been taken on.

You’d be forgiven for walking right past Waxology, discreetly tucked within Saville Hairdressing on Saville Row. Once upstairs Frances welcomed us into the clean, reassuringly clinical treatment room where the treatment was discussed.

At waxology they use hot wax, rather than traditional strip waxing, which is less uncomfortable on intimate areas and can be used on shorter hair; goodbye annoying regrowth period! The thick, alarmingly purple wax goes onto the skin warm and as it cools the wax shrink wraps each hair until it’s firm enough to be pulled quickly – and surprisingly painlessly – away. No hairs are missed, so unlike strip waxing, one area doesn’t have to be waxed repeatedly and irritation is minimal. Frances also applied a thin layer of oil to the skin before waxing to reduce irritation and ensure no skin was stripped. This step alone was enough to convince us, hurray to no post-wax flaky patches!

Frances’s experience and passion for waxing was immediately obvious and she happily chatted away about the different brands of hot wax she’d tested before settling on one, which clients have found even more painless than well-known Lycon wax. We had to agree, the whole experience was very bearable. But it was the pre-treatment experience that really made Waxology stand above general beauty salons. Using her specialist knowledge and experience Frances was able to talk through the options and pinpoint exactly what treatment would best suit our needs, for a newbie to intimate waxing this was very reassuring. Her aim, when dreaming up waxology, was to create a salon where clients could get exactly what they want and know they could return time and again for the same exceptional standard of hair removal.

Waxology offer a wide range of waxing treatments, most using hot wax, for both men and women; however, it’s intimate waxing that is proving most popular as clients are beginning to recommend Frances and Marnie’s expertise. The discreet location of the salon will also be appealing to men (and women) who prefer to keep their hair removal habits private.

Currently open Thursdays and Fridays and soon to offer a late night Thursday, we recommend a visit to waxology for an incredibly professional and painless service, with great results. Aftercare is thorough and the staff are brilliant. A great find in the city centre for the upcoming summer holiday prep!
