Uber has today announced its launching its most affordable product UberX in its sixth British city, Newcastle, today. The company, which has already proved hugely popular in London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Wakefield is now bringing its award-winning service to the North East.

Uber is a technology platform that connects riders and professional private hire licensed drivers in real time via a smartphone app, offering a low-cost, convenient and safe ride – all at the touch of a button. Whether going to work or going out with friends, UberX provides an affordable, safe and convenient way to travel, which will complement the city’s existing transportations options.

Uber prides itself on bringing not only one of the the safest ways to travel, but also the most cost effective. For example, a journey from Newcastle Station to Newcastle Airport will cost approximately £12.80, or from Newcastle University to Quayside will cost approximately £4.30. UberX is set to also improve urban mobility in Newcastle, offering more choice for consumers and drivers on the platform.

UberX – like all services on the Uber platform – is completely cashless, enabling users to book and pay for a private hire car directly through the Uber app. A rider simply has to download Uber from the app store, which will locate them using GPS enabled maps, and request a car at the touch of a button. Once requested, the rider sees the driver’s photo, name and car registration and can watch the driver arrive in real-time on the app. The app notifies the rider when the car arrives, so long gone are the days of waiting outside in the rain looking for a car.

Safety is Uber’s number one priority and the company has set high standards ensuring Newcastle is provided with a safe transportation alternative. All Uber drivers in the UK have passed an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, are licensed by Newcastle City Council and fully insured as private hire drivers.

Tom Elvidge, General Manager for Uber Yorkshire and the North East said:
“Uber has been embraced by riders and drivers in every city it has opened in, and we’re sure Newcastle will be no different. Uber not only helps our passengers get where they need to go seamlessly, it provides unprecedented flexibility and ease to drivers. We’re really looking forward to providing a first-class Uber service in the North East!”
