FUNDAMENTALLY, there are three main factors to consider when planning a stay in Newcastle…
Whether your visiting our great city for business, pleasure or indeed both, you will need a base of operation which is central, affordable and comfortable.
There has been a glut of budget hotels popping up in and around Newcastle lately, claiming that their cost-saving efficiencies reward us with ‘affordability.’ Some of these chains have taken this ethos to a whole new level and have stripped back their amenities so much that their rooms have the same appeal and comfort to that of a police holding cell.
Sleeperz Hotel Newcastle is different. They seem to have found a happy medium between affordability and comfort. For roughly the same price as the other budget hotel chains in the city, Sleeperz offers an affordable, convenient and comfortable stay.
I recently spent a night in Sleeperz Newcastle in order to see If I could really take it ‘eezy’ in this city centre budget hotel.
Situated near to Newcastle’s Central Station, the hotel has recently undergone some what of a renaissance with its decor, transforming the former trendy yet cold looking venue into a warmer more modern contempory setting.
The new look reception with bar and dining area boasts eye-catching striped Modern furniture, sleek, straight lines, smooth shiny surfaces and walls adorned with modern art.
The rooms at Sleeperz exceed all the expectations of a budget hotel. They are a good size, modern functional and comfortable. It’s clear that each rooms’ overall design and general functionality has been meticulously regarded and implemented. The general design scheme of the hotel has been continued in the rooms with straight lines and smooth surfaces including tactile soft furnishings and chic Kardean floors.
As standard, each room features free high speed Wi-Fi internet connection, a digital safe, climate control, free local and national calls to landlines, tea and coffee making facilities and a 32″ flat screen TV.
The beds are a comfy queen-size and the duvets are a decent tog. There is a hairdryer, stainless steel hangers and floating shelves. The wetroom bathroom is enclosed with frosted glass trim and features a shower, Villeroy & Boch sink, no-steam mirrors and a heated floor. Ceiling high double glazed windows suppress all of the outside noise that you would expect from a large and vibrant city.
I opted for a superior room (an extra £25) which featured a king sized bed and boasted a spectacular panoramic view of Newcastle’s skyline. The view alone warranted the extra cost!
The food at Sleeperz isn’t going to set the world on fire, however, its not the worst I’ve ever tasted. Their light menu makes a gratifying stop gap if your either craving a nightime snack or planning to eat ‘on the hop’ before a night out on the toon. I sampled the hot rump steak (£12.95) served with caramelised onion relish, salad, roasted tomatoes and fries, which was fresh and generally decent. The large glass of Chilean veramonte merlot from the 24 hour bar made the meal a lot more palatable.
After a really comfortable night, I opted for the buffet breakfast (£6.95). Again not the greatest, but its definitely edible and there’s plenty to choose from including a full cooked buffet, cereals, pastries, orange juice and bean to cup coffee.
I am happy to crown Sleeperz as the king of Newcastle’s budget hotels as it delivers exactly what it offers, with a few pleasant surprises thrown in. I highly recommend, if planning a stay in Newcastle, you consider this central, affordable and comfortable hotel as your base.
