We love it when small businesses start up in our beloved city and will diligently do all we can to shout about them. So when we discover an enterprise which recognises how cool creative and quirky the North East is, we find ourselves tapping complete strangers on the shoulder in the street and informing them of such a venture.
We’re talking about Upside Down Presents, the new independent gift shop
near Dog Leap Stairs on Newcastle’s Quayside, which opened its big orange door in July 2014. The owner and thoroughly nice chap, Sean, told us that the shop had been a childhood dream of his, which has finally came to fruition.
“I remember when this particular shop was Dog Leap Antiques. I used to walk past and often envisaged having my own shop there.”
This now firmly established, amazing little shop has become an instant favourite of ours as it simply oozes quirkiness from its name, interior, goods and of course Oscar the Dog. Oscar is Sean’s adorable four legged assistant who has quickly become a bit of a celebrity around the Quayside. He hasn’t let the fame go to his head and prefers to give customers a sniff and a lick rather than displaying divaesque behaviour.
“We aren’t exactly just about generating transactions. We’re all about the experience, the personal touch.”
Customers really are spoiled for choice in this ‘homage to all things local and quirky’, with an eclectic mix of locally sourced, good valued products including; stationary and gifts from Geordie Gifts, Original local artwork and photography, the amazing Beckleberry’s ice cream, Jasper’s dog treats and much more. Uber friendly Sean told us that he intends to launch his own range of bespoke quality handmade gifts to sell in conjunction with his quality locally sourced goods. I have no doubt that if these works reflect Sean’s enthusiasm and character; they will be nothing short of a roaring success.
Upsides down presents have their own awesome, user friendly website which gives browsers an insight as to what they are all about, mixed with their own brand of quirky humour of course.
So next time you’re ‘out and about’ around Newcastle’s Quayside, pop into Sean and Oscar’s amazing little shop and I guarantee you will leave with a great valued, quality gift and a smile across your face.
