I love to shout about great deals when they come along, and The Blagdon Brasserie’s ‘Bird on a Board’ offer compelled me to witness, first hand, exactly how such a great valued deal could be achieved without compromising either quality or quantity.
The pre-offer price of the bird on a board is £28- which itself is good value, however, at an offer price of only £19- it becomes truly remarkable value. The offer consists of a large, whole roast chicken served with bacon rolls, unlimited seasonal vegetables, potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. The deal is marketed to feed a family of four which works out at less than £5 per head.
Only 10 minutes drive from Newcastle city centre and situated inside the impressive Holiday Inn at Gosforth Park, The Blagdon Brasserie is the hotel’s recently refurbished integral dining venue. This well established and relaxed setting boasts two spacious floors featuring a bar area on the lower floor which leads to the upper floor dining area.
Minimalistic and tasteful décor complement the venue along with plush chocolate and latté coloured upholstery. Open seven days a week, this slick and dynamic restaurant really shines on a Sunday; when lines are drawn and stops are pulled in order to offer guests and the general public alike something rather special.
“Long term, we hope to see the hotel become recognised for its food and restaurant. Thanks to the new menu and the refurbishments, we’re already well on our way to achieving this.”
The recently revamped menu features carvery and grill options along with the ‘Bird on a Board’ deal. The carvery menu boasts a family-sized feast of tender, slow-cooked meats, a plethora of veg including crispy, ruffled roasties and all the trimmings. The grill menu offers a choice of mouth-watering steaks.
Accompanied by my family, I recently visited the restaurant in order to sample the offer; in keeping within the confines of the trial, we skipped starters and opted for the main. The chicken arrived promptly and was regally presented on its own board which was adorned with Yorkshire puddings, stuffing balls, bacon rolls and roast potatoes. We were also served two boats of rich gravy, carrots, roast parsnips, creamy mashed swede, cabbage and new potatoes.
“The chicken was excellently cooked, plump, succulent and plentiful.”
The chicken was excellently cooked-plump, succulent and plentiful. The Yorkshire puddings were generous in size and perfectly cooked while the mashed swede was smooth with a rich creamy taste. The roasties were crispy on the outside yet fluffy on the inside and the veg was fresh, tender and crispy. All this complimented with a generous smothering of rich gravy, clearly made from a good quality stock.
With almost no room to spare, we were able to squeeze in some delectable desserts which were beautifully presented and scrumptious, rounding off the meal perfectly.
I believe that the size of this ‘poultry paragon’ along with the unlimited veg will easily satisfy four adults, making it even more exceptional value for money. The appeal of the dish lies in its sheer deliciousness and simplicity reinforced by its quality and quantity. I would highly recommend anyone to try this dish, most certainly whist it remains on offer.
